Twisters

Twisters
2024 - PG-13
Director: Lee Isaac Chung
Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones

So I went and watched the new "Twisters" movie. Short story - go see it. Long story - well...
"Twisters" is a very engaging film with lots of tornado action, good storyline and most importantly - one of the few films this year that doesn't push and social or political agenda. I was tripod about seeing this film because the very title of it makes it ripe for a climate change storyline but thankfully that angle never occurs. In fact the closest anything in this film comes to being socially or politically charged is a very minor character who may or may not be androgynous though that is purely a visual observation and nothing in the dialogue alludes to it.
I thought this film would have some kind of connection to the original 1996 "Twister." However the only two connections I could find were 1) both films dealt with tornados and chasers seeking to decipher how they form so they can more easily be predicted and save lives and 2) both films have the little ping pong ball size electronic devices they try to get into the tornado (but this is a minor observance and not a feature of the film the way the original did).
Just as the original "Twister" did, "Twisters" makes use of some great CGI effects to bring home the horror of a tornado. Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) shines as a former cowboy turned self-proclaimed "tornado chaser." Newcomer Daisy Edgar-Jones is delightful as the principle protagonist and weather science whiz even though she looks like she hasn't even graduated high-school yet.
All in all "Twisters" is a really fun movie. Sitting here writing this I'm trying to recall any cussing in the film. Seems like there may have been one or two times but honestly I can't really recall any foul language being used but it IS rated PG-13. What a relief to go to a film that actually doesn't try to stuff a political or social agenda down your throat. It's just good fun for 2 hours.
